Did you know ?
The town of Donaghadee, located on the east coast of the Ards Peninsula in County Down, Northern Ireland, is home to one of the oldest known lifeboat services in the world. In the early 19th century, Donaghadee was a vital point of departure for ships heading to the Americas. The perilous nature of these voyages led to the establishment of a lifeboat service in 1825. This service, predating the formation of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, has saved countless lives over the decades and continues to play a crucial role in maritime safety in the region.

Fun Fact !
Another fascinating aspect of Donaghadee's history is its lighthouse, which is notable for its unique construction and strategic importance. The lighthouse, built in 1836, is the first in Ireland to be constructed from concrete, demonstrating an innovative use of this material in the era. It stands as an iconic symbol of the town and its maritime heritage. Moreover, its location at the entrance of the harbour made it a critical navigational aid during the 19th century, especially for the 'packet ships' carrying mail between Donaghadee and Portpatrick in Scotland. Thus, the lighthouse not only represents an architectural marvel but also a significant chapter in the town's rich seafaring history.
