Did you know ?
The Town of Chesterfield, located in Derbyshire, England, is perhaps most famously known for its 'Crooked Spire', a uniquely twisted church spire adorning the 14th-century Church of St Mary and All Saints. This distinctive architectural marvel is not merely a visual spectacle but is also steeped in local folklore. One legend posits that the spire became twisted when, in the presence of a virgin bride, the devil wound himself around it in surprise, leaving it permanently contorted. This story, while fanciful, underscores the spire's integral role in Chesterfield's cultural identity and its importance in local storytelling traditions.

Fun Fact !
Another lesser-known yet intriguing fact about Chesterfield pertains to its industrial history. In the 19th century, the town was a significant hub for coal mining and the manufacturing of products such as pottery and textiles. However, it is the Chesterfield Canal, completed in 1777, which is often overlooked. This waterway was pivotal in transporting goods and facilitating trade during the Industrial Revolution. Today, the Chesterfield Canal is a testament to the town's industrious past, offering picturesque routes for leisurely walks and boat trips, and playing host to the annual 'Chesterfield Canal Festival'. Thus, it represents a harmonious blend of Chesterfield's historic legacy and contemporary recreational pursuits.

The town sits on an old coalfield, but little visual evidence of mining remains since the closure of the final town centre mine nicknamed The Green Room. The main landmark is the crooked spire of the Church of St Mary and All Saints.
