Fun Fact !
Ashburton is also renowned for its unique cultural event known as the Ale Tasting and Bread Weighing Ceremony. This peculiar tradition dates back to the reign of Elizabeth I, when the town was granted a Royal Charter allowing it to hold a weekly market and an annual fair. To ensure fair trade, the charter stipulated that loaves of bread and ale sold in the town had to meet certain weight and quality standards. The Ale Tasting and Bread Weighing Ceremony, held every June, commemorates this historic charter by inviting townspeople to sample local bread and ale. The event is a vibrant celebration of Ashburton's rich cultural heritage, blending historical tradition with community spirit.
