Fun Fact !
In the sphere of industrial history, Pontardawe holds a unique narrative. The town was once a centre for heavy industry during the 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in the production of tinplate and steel. The Pontardawe Tin Works, established in 1838, was one of the first in the world to integrate all the processes of tinplate manufacture on one site. It played a crucial role in the industrial growth of the region. Today, remnants of this industrial past can be seen in the form of the Pontardawe Canal, which was built to transport coal from the upper Swansea Valley to the tinplate works. This canal serves as a tangible link to the town's industrious past, reminding visitors of Pontardawe's significant contribution to global industry.
