The Town of Chorleywood in Hertfordshire, England, holds a unique place in the history of bread making. It was here, in 1961, that the British Baking Industries Research Association developed a process that would forever change the way bread was made. The Chorleywood Bread Process, as it came to be known, uses high-speed mixers and chemical additives to produce bread in a fraction of the time it traditionally took. This method, despite being criticised for its perceived effect on the quality and nutritional value of the bread, has had a most significant impact on the global bread industry. Today, it is estimated that over 80% of all bread produced in the United Kingdom, and a substantial proportion worldwide, is made using this revolutionary process pioneered in Chorleywood.

Fun Fact !

Chorleywood is not just known for its bread, but also for its remarkable natural beauty. The town is home to Chorleywood Common, a vast, 200-acre area of grassland, woodland, and wetland, which has been a site of significant scientific interest since 1987. Interestingly, the Common was saved from being developed into golf links in the early 1900s by local residents who raised funds to buy it. Today, it serves as a sanctuary for a diverse range of wildlife and is a much-cherished local asset. The Common also played a crucial role during World War II, when it was used to grow food as part of the 'Dig for Victory' campaign. Thus, Chorleywood Common not only offers a peaceful retreat amidst nature but also stands as a testament to the town's community spirit and historical resilience.
