The Town of Bridport, in Dorset, England, holds a fascinating history rooted deeply in its industrial past. It gained prominence during the 13th century with the rise of the rope-making industry, primarily catering to the British Navy. This industry's presence was so pronounced that the streets of Bridport were specifically designed to be wide enough to allow a long 'rope walk', which was essential for the production of ropes and cables. Even today, one can witness these historically wide streets, which stand testament to Bridport's industrial legacy, and the town continues to host a few surviving rope and net making factories, serving as a reminder of its vibrant past.
