The town of Watlington in Oxfordshire, England, holds a unique place in the annals of British history for its association with the hoard of Viking silver coins, known as the 'Watlington Hoard'. Discovered in 2015, this treasure trove of over 200 coins, jewellery, and silver ingots is believed to date back to the late 870s, during the reign of King Alfred the Great of Wessex and his contemporary, King Ceolwulf II of Mercia. The coins bear their images and are considered significant as they shed light on a largely undocumented period of Anglo-Saxon history, challenging the traditionally negative depiction of Ceolwulf II. The Watlington Hoard, now housed in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, is a testament to the town's rich historical tapestry.

Fun Fact !

Another captivating feature of Watlington is its chalk landscape, characterised by the 'Watlington White Mark'. Created in 1764 by Edward Horne, who wanted to give the church steeple the appearance of a spire from a distance, this unusual landmark is a sizeable triangle carved into the hillside on Watlington Hill. Contrary to the typical 'White Horses' prevalent in the chalk hills of England, the Watlington White Mark stands as a unique symbol, offering stunning views across the countryside. The hill forms part of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, adding further geographical charm to the town of Watlington.
