One intriguing aspect of Crewkerne pertains to its rich history in the textile industry. The town was a significant hub for the production of 'sailcloth' during the 18th and 19th centuries, supplying materials for the British Navy at the height of its power. The sailcloth was so highly esteemed that it was specifically requested for Admiral Lord Nelson's flagship, 'HMS Victory'. The legacy of this industrial past is still evident today, with the old Town Mill, originally used for weaving and spinning, preserved as a local landmark.
