The Town of Longtown, nestled in the beautiful county of Cumbria, England, is steeped in rich history and culture. One particularly fascinating aspect of this town is its association with the Graham Clan, a Scottish border clan. The Grahams resided in and around Longtown for centuries and significantly shaped its history. Indeed, the Graham Clan's influence was so profound that the town was once known as 'Grahamstown'. The family's stronghold, Netherby Hall, still stands in Longtown, a testament to their enduring legacy. However, it is lesser-known that the Grahams were also renowned reivers, involved in cross-border raids during the turbulent times of the 16th century. This blend of noble lineage intertwined with a history of lawlessness adds a captivating dimension to Longtown's narrative.

Fun Fact !
Geographically, Longtown is situated close to the confluence of River Esk, River Lyne, and the Border Esk, which has played a crucial role in its development. But what is less commonly known is that this position gave the town strategic military importance during the Jacobite Rising in 1745. Bonnie Prince Charlie's army passed through Longtown on their way south, and the town was also the site of a significant skirmish during their retreat north. The skirmish took place at the Arthuret Church, which is said to be built on the site where King Arthurs sword Excalibur was forged. Today, 'The Mote', a large mound near the church, serves as a poignant reminder of this historical event, and stands as a symbol of Longtown's strategic significance in British history.
