The Town of Dereham, nestled in the heart of Norfolk, England, holds a unique blend of history and folklore that intertwines with its geography. One particularly captivating element is the tale of the Dereham Bell. Legend has it that, in the 18th century, the devil himself stole a bell from the local church tower, intending to carry it to Hell. On his way, he was interrupted by a cock's crow and, in his surprise, dropped the bell into the town's lake. To this day, it is said that the bell can still be heard tolling from beneath the waters, especially on quiet, frosty mornings. This charming story provides a fascinating glimpse into the town's historical lore.

Fun Fact !
The Dereham Windmill, constructed in 1836, stands as a symbol of the town's industrial past. Despite weathering the harsh trials of time, the windmill has been carefully preserved and is one of the few remaining examples of a working mill in Norfolk. This five-storey building, skilfully engineered with a cap that can turn to face the wind, gives a unique insight into Dereham's agricultural history. Interestingly, the windmill has also served as a TV star, appearing in the popular crime drama series 'Kingdom'. Today, it functions as a community hub, hosting a variety of events, and houses a café and an exhibition space, thus subtly blending Dereham's past and present.
Wikipedia Says
Dereham (), also known historically as East Dereham, is a town and civil parish in the Breckland District of the English county of Norfolk. It is situated on the A47 road, about 15 miles (25 km) west of the city of Norwich and 25 miles (40 km) east of King's Lynn. The civil parish has an area of 8.31 sq mi (21.5 km2) and, in the 2001 census, had a population of 15,659 in 6,941 households; it increased to 18,609 by the 2011 census. Dereham falls within, and is the centre of administration for, Breckland District Council. The town should not be confused with the Norfolk village of West Dereham, which lies about 25 miles (40 km) away. Since 1983, Dereham has been twinned with the town of Rüthen in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is also twinned with Caudebec-lčs-Elbeuf, France. In spite of the reunification of Germany in 1990, the sign on the A47 at the entrance to Dereham from the Swaffham direction still refers to Rüthen being in West Germany; this sparks periodic comment in the local press.
