Did you know ?
The Town of Isleworth, nestled in Greater London's western reaches, boasts an illustrious history, with roots extending deep into the Roman era. However, not many are aware that the town was a pivotal centre for religious life during the medieval period. Isleworth was home to a significant monastic establishment, the Syon Abbey, founded by King Henry V in 1415. This Bridgettine monastery, dedicated to St. Bridget of Sweden, was one of the most opulent in England with extraordinary architectural charms. It served as a place of seclusion for monks and nuns until its dissolution by King Henry VIII in 1539. Today, the Syon House, built on the Abbey's former grounds, offers a glimpse into the town's spiritual past.

Isleworth is not just steeped in history; it also harbours a vibrant artistic culture. In the late 19th century, it became a hub for an influential group of artists known as the 'Isleworth Group', including prominent figures like James Tissot and Frank Holl. These artists were drawn to the town's picturesque Thames-side landscapes and unique light quality, which beautifully enhanced their artworks. Their legacy continues with the town's thriving artistic community, which is reflected in the annual 'Isleworth Arts Trail'. This event encourages local artists to open their studios to the public, promoting the town's rich artistic heritage and fostering a sense of unity within the community.
Wikipedia Says
Isleworth ( EYE-zl-wrth) is a suburban town located within the London Borough of Hounslow in West London, England. It lies immediately east of the town of Hounslow and west of the River Thames and its tributary the River Crane. Isleworth's original area of settlement, alongside the Thames, is known as 'Old Isleworth'. The north-west corner of the town, bordering on Osterley to the north and Lampton to the west, is known as 'Spring Grove'. Isleworth's former Thames frontage of approximately one mile, excluding that of the Syon Park estate, was reduced to little over half a mile in 1994 when a borough boundary realignment was effected in order to unite the district of St Margaret's wholly within London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. As a result, most of Isleworth's riverside is that part overlooking the 8.6-acre (3.5 ha) islet of Isleworth Ait: the short-length River Crane flows into the Thames south of the Isleworth Ait, and its artificial distributary the Duke of Northumberland's River west of the Isleworth Ait, one of two Colne distributaries constructed for aesthetic reasons in the 16001750 period.
