Did you know ?
The Town of Crewe, nestled in the heart of Cheshire, England, is most renowned for its historic association with the transportation industry. However, few are aware of its innovative origins. Crewe was not a slow-evolving medieval settlement, but rather a purpose-built, modern railway town. The Grand Junction Railway Company selected this once insignificant hamlet in 1837 to be the site of its locomotive works and station, leading to a rapid growth in population and infrastructure. The name 'Crewe' was derived from the Old Welsh 'cryw', meaning 'weir' or 'ford', which is possibly a reference to the town's earlier geographical features.
