The town of Totnes, nestled in the county of Devon, England, holds an intriguing historical significance. It is believed to be one of the oldest boroughs in the United Kingdom, having received its first charter from King Edgar in 963 AD. But what is most captivating is its connection to the legendary tale of Brutus of Troy. According to this myth, Brutus, a descendant of the Trojan hero Aeneas, sailed to Totnes and made it his home after defeating the giants Gog and Magog. Even today, a stone on Fore Street, known as the 'Brutus Stone', is said to mark the spot where Brutus first stepped ashore.

In terms of culture, Totnes is known for its vibrant and alternative lifestyle. It was the first town in the UK to introduce its own local alternative currency, the Totnes pound, to support local businesses and sustain the local economy. Not only this, Totnes is also considered the birthplace of the 'Transition Town' movement, an international community-led response to the pressures of climate change, fossil fuel depletion, and economic inequality. The movement began in 2006 and has since spread around the world, with thousands of initiatives now following the example set by this small but forward-thinking Devon town.
