The quaint town of Crowle, nestled in North Lincolnshire, England, holds an intriguing historical significance. Perhaps less known is its association with the charmingly unique Crowle Peatland Railway, which served as a critical transport network for the extraction of peat in the 20th century. The peat, which was a valuable source of fuel, was transported via narrow gauge rail systems, including the Crowle Peatland. Today, the remnants of these rail systems are preserved by the Crowle Peatland Railway Society with a view to reinstating some of these lines, bringing to life a significant piece of Crowle's industrial past.

Adding another layer of depth to Crowle's history is its connection to the Second World War. The town was a crucial part of the 'Starfish' decoy system, designed to mislead enemy bombers during the war. Ingenious structures were built, mimicking the night-time industrial landscape, to attract the bombs and protect populated areas and critical infrastructure. The decoy site located just south of Crowle, was one of about 200 sites across the country. While it is a lesser-known aspect of the town's history, it underscores the strategic importance of Crowle during a critical period in world history.

Crowle is a market town in the civil parish of Crowle and Ealand, on the Isle of Axholme in the North Lincolnshire unitary authority of Lincolnshire, England. The civil parish had a population at the 2011 census of 4,828. The town lies on the Stainforth and Keadby Canal. Notable buildings in the town include the parish church, in which can be seen the Crowle Stone runic cross shaft, and the Gothic revival market hall.
