Great Yarmouth, a charming coastal town in Norfolk, England, is renowned for its rich maritime heritage. However, one lesser-known fact about this town is its unique connection to the herring fish. For over a millennium, since the Saxon times, Great Yarmouth had been a pivotal herring port, with the town's prosperity significantly dependent on the 'Silver Darlings'. By the early 20th century, it was the largest herring port in the world, with over a thousand boats and 10,000 fishermen arriving annually for the season. The town even had a Fish Wharf, which was a mile long, demonstrating the immense importance of the herring industry to Great Yarmouth.

Fun Fact !
Another intriguing fact about Great Yarmouth is that it is home to one of the UK's oldest surviving wooden roller coasters, the 'Scenic Railway' at the Pleasure Beach. Erected in 1932, this classic amusement ride is one of only two 'Scenic Railways' left in the world and is listed as a Grade II historic building by English Heritage. The Scenic Railway has maintained its traditional operation, requiring a 'brakeman' to ride along and control the speed manually. This nod to the past, amidst the modern thrill rides that surround it, continues to charm visitors and offers a glimpse into the leisure activities of bygone eras.
Wikipedia Says
Great Yarmouth ( YAR-mth), often called Yarmouth, is a seaside town which gives its name to the wider Borough of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, England; it straddles the River Yare and is located 20 miles (32 km) east of Norwich. Its fishing industry, mainly for herring, shrank after the mid-20th century and has all but ended. North Sea oil from the 1960s supplied an oil-rig industry that services offshore natural gas rigs; more recently, offshore wind power and other renewable energy industries have ensued. Yarmouth has been a resort since 1760 and a gateway from the Norfolk Broads to the North Sea. Holiday-making rose when a railway opened in 1844, bringing easier, cheaper access and some new settlement. Wellington Pier opened in 1854 and Britannia Pier in 1858. Through the 20th century, Yarmouth boomed as a resort, with a promenade, pubs, trams, fish-and-chip shops, theatres, the Pleasure Beach, the Sea Life Centre, the Hippodrome Circus, the Time and Tide Museum and a Victorian seaside Winter Garden in cast iron and glass.
