What is less known, however, is that the town played a crucial role during World War II. As the war threatened, a secret plan was devised to create a decoy 'Peterhead' to confuse enemy bombers. The decoy, named 'Starfish', was located a few miles away and consisted of a network of lights and fires designed to mimic the town and its industries. This clever subterfuge was successful, with several bombing raids mistakenly targeting the decoy, saving the actual town from significant damage and loss of life.
