Did you know ?
The town of Elland, located in West Yorkshire, England, carries a rich history that dates back to the medieval era. A less-known aspect of this charming town is its connection to the Knights Templar, a medieval Catholic military order. In the 13th century, the Knights Templar were granted lands in Elland and other parts of Yorkshire. The Templar's presence in Elland is still evident today in the form of Elland's 'Old Church', a Grade II listed building, the existence of which has been recorded since 1086. This ancient church was initially under the control of the Knights Templar before passing to the Knights Hospitallers, another medieval Catholic order, following the dissolution of the Templars.

Fun Fact !
Another captivating element of Elland's history is its longstanding tradition of making stone products. The town had a well-established stone industry, utilising the local sandstone, which was famed for its quality and durability. Elland's stone was exported far and wide and was used in significant construction projects, including the rebuilding of the Houses of Parliament in London in the 19th century after they were destroyed by fire. This tradition of stone craftsmanship is not just a relic from the past but continues today, with local quarries still producing 'Elland Edge' stone, keeping this distinctive aspect of the town's cultural heritage alive.
