The Town of Lewes, nestled within the beautiful county of East Sussex in England, is steeped in a rich and fascinating history. One of the most captivating and lesser-known aspects of this charming town's past is its connection to the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. This infamous conspiracy involved a group of provincial English Catholics who planned to blow up the House of Lords and assassinate King James I, with the aim of restoring a Catholic monarch to the throne. Lewes resident John Fawkes, a relative of the plot's most famous conspirator Guy Fawkes, was deeply involved in the scheme. In honour of this historical event, every year on the 5th of November, the town hosts one of the most recognised bonfire night celebrations in the world, with several bonfire societies participating in the parade, each having its own unique costume, from early 17th century dress to topical contemporary outfits.

Another intriguing feature of Lewes lies within its geographical uniqueness. The town is built on a gap in the South Downs, carved out by the River Ouse, which has led to an unusual configuration of the streets, with many of them being unusually steep or unexpectedly winding. This unique layout has resulted in Lewes being referred to as a town of 'gaps and secret twittens', the latter term being a Sussex word for a narrow path or alleyway between walls or hedges. It is also worth noting that the chalk from the surrounding downs was used historically for the construction of several of the town's buildings, providing Lewes with a distinctive and characterful appearance that sets it apart from its neighbouring towns.
