The Town of Bedwas, nestled within the Caerphilly County Borough in Wales, United Kingdom, has a rich industrial history that is not widely known. One of its significant contributions to the nation's industrial development was the Bedwas Navigation Colliery. Established in 1905, this coal mine was one of the largest employers in the region, shaping the socio-economic structure of the town. Remarkably, the colliery was one of the first to use the pioneering 'long-wall' mining technique, a methodology that greatly increased productivity and safety. The colliery ceased operations in 1985, but its impact on the town and the country's industrial heritage remains profound.

Fun Fact !
Another lesser-known aspect of Bedwas revolves around its contribution during the Second World War. The town was home to one of the largest munitions factories in the United Kingdom, ROF Bridgend. This facility played a pivotal role in the war effort, producing millions of small arms ammunition. The factory was so important that a decoy site, known as a 'Starfish site', was set up nearby to mislead enemy bombers. The Starfish site would light up to mimic an urban area under blackout conditions, drawing enemy fire away from the actual factory. This intriguing piece of history underscores the strategic importance of Bedwas during a critical period in global history.
