The town of Gillingham, nestled in the picturesque county of Dorset, England, boasts a rather intriguing history. One of the lesser known facts about this charming town lies in its royal connections. In the 11th and 12th centuries, Gillingham was a royal forest, frequently visited by kings and queens for hunting. King John, in particular, was known to have a hunting lodge in Gillingham Forest. The lodge was so frequently used that it was even mentioned in the Magna Carta of 1215. This royal association imbues Gillingham with a rich historical tapestry that is often overlooked.

Fun Fact !
Another intriguing aspect of Gillingham is related to its geographical significance. Positioned on the River Stour, Gillingham was traditionally an important stop for pilgrims travelling to the sacred site of Shaftesbury Abbey. The town served as a resting place, offering solace and refreshment to the weary travellers. However, with the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century, including Shaftesbury Abbey, Gillingham's role as a pilgrim's rest stop dwindled. Despite this change, Gillingham's location continues to be of importance today, particularly for walkers and cyclists enjoying the North Dorset Trailway, a 14-mile route following the old Somerset and Dorset Railway line.
